The Roots – “How I Got Over” Track Listing

The Roots - How I Got Over

The Roots’ ninth album, and third on Def Jam, is due June 22nd. Only nine tracks?

?uestlove is a proponent of the less is more theory (see Nas’ Illmatic or Sly & The Family Stone’s Stand!), so it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. The as yet unheard lead single is called “Dear God 2.0” and is a remix/re-imagining of Monsters of Folk’s “Dear God.”

Track list after 2009’s (wtf?) “How I Got Over” video.

  12. I’m actually kind of perturbed at this. This album is almost 8-9 months late since it was supposed to drop back in October of last year. I thought we would get something along the lines of Illadelph as far as length was concerned, but now we find that it’s even shorter than Game Theory and Rising Down which were short enough as it was. I don’t doubt that the quality of the tunes will be fantastic, but I need an album longer than 35 minutes. If it wasn’t for the leaked Sandwiches album with Roots cuts from their tenure with Fallon, I’d be really annoyed. But it’s all instrumental.

And speaking of which, I’m hoping that this track listing above is glaringly omitting Talib Kweli and Mos Def because they fall under “The Roots” and not as guests anymore. I don’t think there is an album that doesn’t have them on it that I can recall and it’s almost expected to hear them. Hopefully, this is just a track listing oversight.

As for the length, I’m assuming that this is primarily because of how busy they are being Fallon’s house band. But this was very disheartening to read. At least we actually have a date now. and dammit, I’ll buy it anyway!
