Jay-Z’s Stash Spot Found?

560 State Street, Brooklyn, NYC

560 State Street, Brooklyn, NYC

“I used to cop in Harlem, all of my Dominicanos/Right there up on Broadway, pull me back to that McDonald’s/Took it to my stash SPOT 560 State Street/Catch me in the kitchen like a Simmons with them pastries.”—Jay-Z “Empire State of Mind”

The heads at NY Mag’s Vulture Blog went to the trouble of interviewing cats at Jay-Z’s old stomping grounds (no Marcy Projects) in BK. Since it was shouted out in his ditty with Alicia Keys, it was bound to happen. Listen closely, Hov says “spot,” not “box.” Doesn’t seem like them, or Curbed, have grasped the concept of a stash spot, though.

Below, the making of The Blueprint 3’s artwork. Almost Gold in a week? Guess Hov really is running the map.

Swine Flu Rap

“J-A-Y, I flow sick,” said, Jay-Z on “Money, Cash Hoes.” You know, that song that also features Crackman Darkman X who is now calling Jay Kanye “heartless” (see below).

Hov probably didn’t have Jerome Clark’s awkward (let me be nice) attempt at flowing about swine flu prevention in mind when he said the aforementioned line (or when he said he was “the only MC with the flu” on “Brooklyn’s Finest”). Someone get Clark, the medical director of the Long Island Railroad, a deal with Purell. [Spotted at NY Mag]

E! True Hollywood Story: Rapper Wives

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Was watching the E! True Hollywood Story on Rapper Wives. Needless to say it wasn’t the best of looks for the rapping hubbies.

Mos Def’s ex-stripper wifey, Alana Wyatt, filed for divorce a few months after they got married in 2005, but he hasn’t signed the papers—so they’re still married. DMX is…pretty much in a bad spot (to put it nicely). And the late, great Big Pun, according to his widow Liza Rios and damning video, was unfortunately a wife beater. [sigh]

The only rappers that came out unscathed were Uncle Luke and neglected white rapper Paul Wall (he just dropped an album, ya know). Guess Jay-Z and Beyoncé weren’t available. Shout out to former spouses KRS-One and Ms. Melody too.

Can a rapper have a healthy marriage in the Hip-Hop game? Surely; if he or she wants to. But that applies to any marriage, rapper or not. Respect those vows.

I asked her to leave the chain at home.

Bun B X Top 5 Dead or Alive

RIP Pimp C

RIP Pimp C

I’m a realist about the world. I don’t sit around wondering too much about too much. I deal with everything how it’s supposed to be dealt with according to my personal spiritual law. I regret that there where things that [Pimp C] couldn’t be apart of as far as his family and his children, but I was very blessed to have not just a good friend but a great business partner as well. But before I had even started the process to working on his album, I had to come to terms with what happened. You know you never get over it.  You learn to move past it but, it doesn’t take more than five or ten steps before you see something that reminds you of him.”—Bun B

That quote from the Southern Rap Impresario didn’t make the cut, so I thought I’d share. Props go to the homie Martin A. Berrios who dropped the “Top 5 Dead or Alive” concept on AHH that plenty people seem to be jocking lately (yes, shots). [Bun B’s Top 5 Dead or Alive via AllHipHop.com]

I got to listen to the final UGK album, 4 Life, a few weeks back and got to chat with Bun B for a bit on the last UGK studio album and on his fav rappers (it’s an interesting list). Oh yeah, Bun B bodied Hov on “Big Pimpin’.” Listen to his verse again before you question the kid.
