VIDEO: Aloe Blacc “I Need a Dollar”

We all do. Good to see Aloe Blacc getting his propers for “I Need a Dollar,” the first single from his upcoming Good Things (Stones Throw) album and the opening theme song for HBO’s How to Make It In America. Above is the infectious catchy tune’s smooth video; the song at the tail end is “Take Me Back.”

The homie Trent at Beats and Rants keenly compares Blacc’s voice to Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye. Not sure about the latter—maybe early Marvin—but spot on with the former. I could see Blacc killing a remake of “Lovely Day” or “Just the Two of Us” (no Will Smith).

If you’re unfamiliar, look up music from Emanon, Blacc’s Hip-Hop group with producer Exile.

Luis Guzman x Rasta Monsta x How to Make It in America

“Rasta Monsta, tastes like fruit punch, pero spicy.” —Rene

Luis Guzman is frikkin’ hilarious. I’m still debating the merits of HBO’s How to Make It in America (suspect acting, a vanilla take on streetwear/fashion, etc.) but one of the show’s main draws is “Rene” as portrayed by Guzman. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the LES, Guzman is a perfect fit for the show, lending authenticity to his Rasta Monsta advocate/Dominican loan shark of a character.

Saying Guzman has an extensive acting resume is like saying Lil Wayne has dropped a couple of songs here and there. Revisit many a movie—Carlito’s Way, Boogie Nights— and you’ll be like, “Oh s**t, he was in that flick too?!”

But what makes Guzman possibly the coolest cat to ever rep the LES? He farms, cheese. That’s why you may have noticed him in those Cabot ads. Farming, son. It gets no realer.

Genuine Tru Blood

No need to microwave...

As a fan of HBO’s True Blood I will be purchasing some bottles of “genuine” Tru Blood off g.p. Actually, they don’t come in O+, B- or any blood type variation; it’s pretty much blood orange flavored soda. But a definite conversation starter.

I still think Sookie’s loose cannon antics are worthy of at least a firm shaking. It’s not like she could survive two hits to the dome with a flat screen TV like LorenaBill’s surly maker—after all. [Spotted at Uncrate]
