That is NOT XXL Magazine’s 2010 Freshman List

ya been had...

The Animal NY blog posted an alleged list of the XXL Magazine’s Freshman Class for 2010. [Full Disclosure: I’ve been freelancing for XXL magazine for 7+ years]. Not so fast.

Anyway, on first look the “letterhead” looked mad fraudulent. When I get any official correspondence from XXL it does not look anything like document above. So then I hit up XXL’s Deputy Editor Rob Markman with the link, asking if it was legit. Rob told me he’d hit me back with an official statement in few. He forwarded me the following e-mail which I copied and pasted below.

The above list isn’t bad per se (no Pac Div, though? blasphemy), but it’s a sham. No disrespect to the artists on said list.

Official Statement:
I’m writing from XXL to let you know the email about XXL’s 2010
Freshman Class
is a fake list that did not come from our magazine.

While we are flattered about the enthusiasm and heat The Freshman
Class generates,
this list did not come from XXL and was most likely created and leaked
by someone in hopes of boosting their career.

We are always on the lookout for the most promising artists who do, in
fact, make it into XXL.

The current issue of XXL (our double Dec/Jan 2010 issue with 50 Cent
on the cover) is on stands now.

  6. It’s obvious that this list is fraudulent.

First off, there’s no Pill or Freddie Gibbs — two of the hottest buzz artists on the Internets right now. The editors of XXL are not that out of touch.

No disrespect to the artists on this list, but some of them are hardly Freshmens, more like Sophomores.

In my opinion, if you drop a full album, you are not a Freshman.

  7. You’re a fuggin idiot, Blu dropped a full album and was on the list and got all the attention he deserved for being on that list.

  8. is a freshmen list coming though?

  9. @Blah

If you are referring to my comment, it’s hardly idiotic. I’m not saying those who drop a full-length album shouldn’t get any attention, far from it. Blu is a great rapper/artist who deserves all the press he gets — lists or no lists, cover or no cover.

But for me, a Freshman is a newcomer; a buzz artist (example: Drake, Nicki M., Pill, Freddie Gibbs); someone who is coming into the rap game. To me, if an artist drops two full-length albums, I don’t see how you can call that artist a “Freshman.” That’s my personal opinion. Unless, you are judging by sales status and/or lack of recognition.

There are plenty of rap newcomers — some who are unsigned — who haven’t dropped a full album but have released great mixtapes and/or singles (example: Kendrick Lamar).

I think a better discussion here would be who do you think should be on the Freshmen List. And having said that, I just might make a blog about it.

  14. Everybody doggin’ this htwenty kid. He must secretly control the rap media huh? Part of the Rap-Illuminati maybe? Do you think websites are in the habit of publishing findings from anonymous emails? I think XXL leaked this list, have you ever seen this many people talking about the freshman class? Htwenty is a scapegoat. Sales,Sales,Sales!

  15. Next time, check with XXL before you post and circulate bs. The rap media is to blame. Stop the hate, these kids are just trying to make it. Text messages and emails are alot better than paying for spins. Besides, I heard this was a X/Twenty conspiracy to get them both in the book.
